The Roman historian Plutarch
tells us that November takes its name from the number nine since it was
the penultimate month of the year when the Roman calendar only had 10
months. November consisted of 29 days until Julius Caesar gave it 31 days
in his calendar. November 22 is the festival of Artemis Calliste,
patroness of music. The rutting, or mating, season of reindeer, which
extends from August to early November, is now coming to a close and males
who may control a group of up to 10 or 12 females are busy. For all of you
who like to join in reindeer games, sounds as if November is your chance
for a last hurrah before Winter sets in. After all, November 30th is the
Roman festival of Andros, the personification of manhood and virility. |
