Photos of the town of Tela, on the North Coast of Honduras....

Carlos grew up on the North Coast of Honduras until he was about 12 years old. There are a group of people who inhabit this region known as the "Garifuna" which literally means "the people". These are the black Caribes who over 300 years ago were abandoned to the Islands of St. Vincent and Roatan, off the coast Honduras. These are African decendants of the slave industry,  who escaped being slaves. The Garifuna have a number of different religious ceremonies they perform using drumming and dancing.

Click here to play the ceremony.

One of their religious ceremonies involves a New Years Dance Troupe called the Yankunoo who go from house to house around the first of the year just as Christmas Carolers do in the states. For a small donation, they will perform a drumming ceremony in front of your home to cleanse your house of any evil spirits and gremlins. During the drumming, you open your windows and doors of your home so the bad spirits will leave. Twenty years ago on January 1, 1979, Carlos was home visiting his family and he thought to set a tape recorder in the window. Since then, we have always played this tape around the first of the year, anytime we have moved into a new home, or anytime there seem to be gremlins about! Peace!
