What is Lick Builder?

Lickbuilder is a useful "applet" for musicians who are learning to improvise or are interested in improving their skills at improvisation. One useful improvisational technique is to take the chords in a song or piece of music and get each note of the chord and calculate the permutations of that chord...you remember algebra... 4 items in all possible non-repeating combinations produces 24 different variations.
Lickbuilder helps generate all of the possible permutations of 3 or 4 chords for up to 8 chord changes in a song.
For example: the chord Cmaj7 which is made up of the notes C E G B can be played as C E G B , E G B C, G B E C , etc. thereby changing the melodies contour or shape but satisfying the harmony.

Even though most average people can calculate 24 permutations in 5 minutes or so, the computer can do it in several milliseconds and in 5 minutes time you can produce the permutations of all of the chords in an entire song at once. The full version of our program lets you calculate 8 chords at once and then save or print them, and then clear them all out and do another 8, etc. Why 8? Most popular songs are composed in groups of 8 bars or related to 8 (like 12, 16, 32, etc.)

Our program does not randomly generate these permutations, so composers who are looking to use the same pattern or melodic fragment need only look in the same spot in the printed chart to find the same relationship between tones across 8 chords, in other words the relationship 2341 for instance, is found in the same place throughout all of the calculations.
